Got Lemons? Make Lemonade

Gotta love the summer. Our house got a new coat of paint on the inside and outside. It looks awesome and feels like a new home - our home. When we first moved in, one of the things I wanted to do immediately was get some new colour...but things got busy and 3.5 years later we finally made it happen. Kayla's room has a focus wall - Paradise Green - which suits her personality to a tee.

Giving the house a paint feels kind of like a fresh start. We've had a rough start with Lauren, and while she continues to progress at her pace, she is progressing. Over the last few months, all of her therapists have been amazed at some of the new skills she is displaying. Lauren is now walking a few feet on her own consistently and is climbing down the stairs using the rails. She is even walking on the treadmill for 8 minutes at a time at physio and at Grandma's house. Lauren has mastered stacking rings, putting pegs into a peg hole, playing the piano and dropping objects in a container. The OT has been working on these activities with her for several months to better her hand motor control and fine motor coordination. A few months ago, she would have never banged her hands on a toy piano. Even a piano with big fat keys and easy to push on keys -  It seems easy enough, just bang your hand on the keys - but she would just sit and look at it and if you tried to hold her hand to show her how to bang the piano, she would have pulled her hand away and started whining. She is very reluctant and scared to use her hands which has something to do with Lauren "reaching for objects" at 9 months when most babies do this at 4 months.  But now - she loves banging and "playing" the piano!

Lauren is learning to feed herself with a fork and spoon. She won't pierce the food or dip the spoon herself, but if you do it, she will bring it to her mouth. So yay for Lauren - I guess this is a brag post for her. Finally I have something to brag about!! It has been awhile. Most therapy sessions, I dredge because there isn't much to report. But definitely the last few over the past month or two, we always have something new to report. Small things, but at least its something.

The only downside is Lauren did not pass her most recent hearing test, and the audiologist thinks the tubes might have fallen out. Her speech is still non existent but we are getting a little bit more babbling and vocalizations - but the babbling continues to be all the same.."mamamama".

Oh well. I've learned to focus on the positive and stay out of the negative thoughts. I can say I've definitely become more about living in the now and focusing less on what the future holds.  I know she is behind and different but she's a cutie that always make me smile. She is who she is, and we love her all the same. When life throws you lemons, make lemonade - and that's what I'm doing and I'm enjoying every sip, every day. Life is sweet again.
